Viagra Pulmonary Hypertension
When I first heard the words Viagra pulmonary hypertension altogether in one sentence, I immediately thought there was some sort of side effect of Viagra that caused a lung disorder such as pulmonary hypertension. However, when I studied the topic more closely, I found something quite different to be the case.
Viagra and Pulmonary Hypertension
It has been found Viagra may play a very important role in the treatment or prevention of pulmonary hypertension.
The most basic function Viagra performs is getting the blood to flow freely in very small veins. Very small veins are found in the lungs. These very small veins get even smaller when a person has the symptoms of pulmonary hypertension. A great challenge has always been getting blood to flow in these veins. Until Viagra, that is.
Originally, Viagra was designed to help men with erectile dysfunction. This problem comes about as veins constrict mostly, due to age. With Pulmonary hypertension, veins constrict due to the disease. However, in either case, Viagra is able to open up these veins and let the blood flow more easily. For a person with pulmonary hypertension, this is a Godsend.
Climb That Mountain
It is interesting how the study was performed that led to the conclusion Viagra helps with pulmonary hypertension. The study was done on mountain climbers.
Normally, one would think of someone who was using Viagra to be aging and maybe, not in the best of health. When we think of a mountain climber we, naturally, would think of someone quite the opposite. However, when at a high elevation it is near impossible to get oxygenated blood to flow through the veins in the lungs, or really, anywhere in the body.
In a test, some of these mountain climbers took Viagra, others took placebos. It was found, when at the higher elevations the mountain climbers who had taken the Viagra were able to get more blood to flow though their lungs than those mountain climbers who had taken the placebos.
A Great Mistake
Many times discoveries have been made by accident. As the story goes, Christopher Columbus discovered America by mistake and Newton wasn't really out to discover gravity. Now we find a cure for E.D. may turn out to be a lifesaver.
