Hypertension Causes
Known Causes of Hypertension

In recent years hypertension has become more and more common, especially in wealthy countries like the U.S.  Many people wonder what they may have possibly done to end up with high blood pressure and others, who are intent on not getting it wonder just what it is they should avoid doing.  There are several possible hypertension causes.  Let's start with the most common and work our way toward the more obscure.

Obesity

The most common cause of high blood pressure today is obesity.  Carrying extra weight puts an undue burden on the human heart.  This, by itself, is the definition of high blood pressure.  Whenever the heart needs to beat harder, it is in need of using more pressure.

Of course, losing weight or maintaining a normal body weight is the way to combat this.  Obesity is one of the more basic hypertension causes.

Alcohol

It has been said that a glass of wine a day thins the blood and helps keep your blood pressure low.  While there is a great deal of controversy about this, there are not too many health professionals totally condemning all use of wine, or really, any alcoholic beverage for that matter.  However, as the old adage states, "Anything in moderation."

The problem is a lot of people's use of alcohol falls into the category of alcohol overuse or sometimes even, alcohol abuse.  If you want to find a way to end up with high blood pressure, try alcohol overuse.  It is one of the more ubiquitous hypertension causes.

Cigarette Smoking

Probably, if you are a smoker, you don't need any more reasons to quite, but in case you do, add hypertension to the long list of diseases cigarette smoking will cause you sooner or later.  Every time you light up you raise your blood pressure and heart rate.  Cigarette smoking is about as dangerous as playing Russian roulette.

Sodium

One way to treat hypertension is to take diuretics.  Diuretics do exactly the opposite of what salt does.  Salt holds fluids in the body.  Diuretics wash fluid and salt away.  It is not every hypertension patient that benefits from taking diuretics but those who are retaining too much fluid do need them to lower their blood pressure.

The first thing a doctor will tell a patient when he or she has an elevated blood pressure reading is, "Watch the salt."

Anxiety

Anxiety can bring on hypertension, on a very temporary basis.  So temporary, a patient sometimes will only have high blood pressure in the doctor's office.  This is called white coat hypertension.  It can be pretty hard to track down and is one of the reasons a doctor doesn't prescribe a medication the first time a patient has a high blood pressure reading.

Sometimes a steady diet of anxiety will make it necessary for the doctor to prescribe a blood pressure medicine to the patient.

There are other rare causes of hypertension, which include lead intoxication, lipids in the bloodstream and obstruction of the colon.  Many times a health care provider will be unable to determine the cause of the high blood pressure and will not really be all too concerned about what has caused it.  After all, the important thing is controlling it.
