Using Herbs For Treating High Blood Pressure
Over the past 30 years or so, the west has become familiar with herbs as medication substitutes. Many believe herbs are natural. In fact some people who study, use and sell herbs are referred to as naturalists. The theory is, herbs are natural and drugs are synthetic so, herbs are safer and give their user benefits that are superior to that of a prescription medication.
Herbs and Treating High Blood Pressure
Naturalists, or herbalists, make claims that several different herbs have been successful in controlling high blood pressure. While I don't doubt this to be true, I have to question a person's motivation to, after he finds he has high blood pressure, choose an herbalist over a doctor for his or her care.
To try to make my point, let's take the case of one the popular herbs that has been said to cure high blood pressure.
The Effects of Hawthorne
Hawthorne berries grow on trees in northern Europe. They have been used for centuries, herbalists say these berries are beneficial in controlling blood pressure and aiding as a cure in heart disease. Hawthorne is also touted as being an aid in curing insomnia and calming nerves.
It is pretty much agreed by all that Hawthorne has a sedating effect. So, what kind of side effects might be associated with this herb? A couple of the stated side effects of Hawthorne are dizziness, a slow heartbeat or palpitations, and nausea. My question is; what would you do if you had a slow beating, palpitating heart along with dizziness? Probably, if this went on for very long, you would have somebody take you to the Emergency Room or, at least you would call your doctor, if you weren't too dizzy to use the phone, that is!
Medication Vs. Hawthorne
Maybe, the right thing to do with high blood pressure is go to your doctor in the first place. Many of today's prescription blood pressure medications are, actually safer than many of herbs, and if a patient runs into a problem from taking an ill-prescribed medication, he or she has some recourse. On the other hand, if you went to a health food store and bought a lot of herbs, went home and took them and they made you very ill, you would have to agree, you would have no one to blame but yourself.
Actually, I believe in vitamins. I take them every day. I have heard doctors take them, too. I also take flaxseed. Flaxseed isn't an herb however, it's a food. I've read reports that claim flaxseed can do great things for a person. Amongst those things is it helps control blood pressure. However, I've never heard about flaxseed having a side effect other than the fact too much of it will make you visit the bathroom frequently.
Still, I wouldn't take flaxseed or anything else unless a doctor said it was all right to do so. Certainly, it would be very unwise to not take a prescribed medication no matter what the circumstance. In short, use herbs very carefully, and never try to treat yourself, especially, if you have been diagnosed with something as potentially dangerous as high blood pressure.
