Hypertension Beliefs

There are many false beliefs about hypertension.  Less discuss what hypertension is.  Hypertension is a blood pressure reading that is higher than 140/90.  Hypertension is called the silent killer because it usually has no symptoms.  The reason it is serious is it will cause more strain on the heart while the heart pumps blood through the arteries.  This can, eventually, cause arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.

Hypertension is more common in African-Americans than Caucasians and is one of the leading causes of kidney failure, also commonly referred to as ESRD (end-stage renal disease).

Salt

Salt, MSG, and baking soda all contain some amount of sodium.  A salt restricted diet is a good idea for a person with high blood pressure.  Salt, or sodium chloride, is safe when used in modest amounts.

Stroke

With hypertension, the heart works harder and your chances of a stroke and heart attack are greater.  Blood pressure, which is not being treated and controlled, can lead to these conditions and also, a person whose blood pressure is elevated is at risk for congestive heart failure, kidney damage or even blindness.  

More than half of the people who have had heart attacks or strokes had high blood pressure at the time of that occurrence.  According to the American Heart Association, most people who have a first heart attack, a first stroke or congestive heart failure had blood pressure that was considered elevated.  The higher your blood pressure is, the greater your risk.

Diabetes

Normally, a blood pressure reading of up to 140/90 is considered in the normal range.  However, in people with diabetes, a blood pressure reading that is more than 130/80 is considered elevated.  If you have diabetes as well as hypertension, you must be especially careful about controlling your blood pressure.  When combined with obesity, smoking and/or high cholesterol levels, diabetes makes the risk of heart attack or stroke several times greater.  To compound this, hypertension is twice as likely to strike a person with diabetes than a person without diabetes.

Women

Woman showing the early signs of heart disease face a greater risk in pregnancy.  Women who have high blood pressure before getting pregnant are more likely to have complications that can threaten the lives of both the mother and the baby.

Hypertension can be the result of a lifestyle that is less than healthy.  Many times, making a lifestyle change that involves eating the right foods and getting a fair amount of rest, can get it back under control.  Exercise is also helpful in fighting high blood pressure.  Also, if stress is a factor in ones life, he should consider relaxation techniques, such as meditation.

In short, hypertension can be, and often is, treated with regular aerobic exercise, weight reduction, if obesity is a problem, salt restriction, and, many times, medications.  When hypertension is not found and treated, it can cause the heart to get larger, which may lead to heart failure.  Hypertension is most prevalent in middle-aged and elderly people and is a leading cause of a several health problems.  Therefore it is recommended everyone gets his or her blood pressure checked regularly.
